I am looking for a conversion table or formula's to compare different coated abrasive belts. I understand the Fepa grading system is commonly used in Europe (P-number). Also used (especially by older employees) is the term "mesh". The manufacturers of new fine abrasives tend to use their own grading systems, based on grain size.
Micron Grit Conversion We have had a couple of questions recently regarding how the micron sizes used in our 3M lapping film equate to waterstone grits. Adrienne has done a little research and plotted the line of best fit between several sources (which were very close anyhow) and established the equation of the resulting line as 11139 times the ...
The term 'Mesh' is used to describe the size of an abrasive particle. In some instances, such as with Aluminum Oxide Grit or Silicon Carbide Grit, a single number is used. This does not mean every particle in that product is exactly that size but rather than mesh size indicator is approximately the mean or average size of the range of particles in that grade.
Some prefer to convert grit to micron and others micron to grit. This is the purpose of the tables above, easily convert between the two. These charts are also often referred to as a sieve size chart. Sieve Sizes. For grit sizes below 240, physical screens can be used to measure grit. Mar 30, 2007· Micron is sort for micrometer. One micron is one-millionth of a meter (hey, I just used the metric system). So the smaller the number in microns, the finer the grit. So with the help of readers and published statistics, I've put together a spreadsheet of common sharpening media and converted them to microns for you. The chart covers:
We also used a micron to grit conversion chart from one of the oldest quality tool suppliers in North America. The two sources we used to convert micron to grit were the Gem Cutting Abrasives In Grit, Mesh, and Microns [7] from the International Gem Society and the Grit = Micron = Mesh Conversion Chart from Gesswein [8] .
